Talk to the Past

After informing students that 9/11 was a national day of service, I prompted my class to come up with a community service project idea. After some discussion, the class decided they would visit a local nursing home because they believed that some elderly people in nursing homes may not have family or friends to visit with, and they didn't want them to feel forgotten. The class thought this project would not only cheer up the residents but also allow someone who may feel insignificant a chance to share their past and knowledge with those of a  younger generation. Not wanting to visit empty-handed, the students raised money to purchase puzzles and coloring books to bring to the residents. I am so proud of my class for their initiative, efforts, and most of all, their empathy.
